The Advantages of Blended Instruction in the World Language Classroom
Recently, Rosetta Stone Education and edWeb.net presented “The Classroom Advantage: Exploring the Advantages of Blended Instruction in the World Language Classroom”, a webinar hosted by Deb Cody, the World Language Liaison for the Pueblo (Colorado) City School District.
Ms. Cody began the presentation with a discussion isolating the 21st century’s students from those of previous generations. These students are:
- Digitally literate (since early childhood)
- Experiential – Modern learning is through doing
- Connected – Used to being connected with people from around the world instantaneously
- Mobile – For them, technology has always been in their pocket
Unlike more traditional learning strategies, blended learning reflects the realities of the modern student. Yet, blended learning does not have to radically change teachers’ ways of work.
In Pueblo, blended learning is delivered primarily through the district’s language labs. These labs consist of roughly 30 desktop PCs. Students spend around an hour per week in the labs. They also access their Rosetta Stone curriculum in the classroom through their wireless devices. The teachers also use the software to reinforce the in-person learning that occurs in the classroom.
Blended learning is also adaptive. There will always be students who fall behind or succeed in such a way that they need to be challenged further. Because online learning works at a student’s own pace, each student in the class makes more efficient progress than if they forced to work in line with the average classmate.
Perhaps most important is the ways Pueblo’s Rosetta Stone-powered blended learning solution helps teacher inform the instruction they provide in the classroom.
While students are working in the system, teachers are able to monitor their screens in real time, helping them identify where students struggle and allowing them to provide immediate help. If monitoring during a class period is too intensive, Rosetta Stone provides Pueblo’s teachers with reporting that produces an unbiased view of student success that aligns with ACTFL’s range levels.
