Why Study Spanish?

As the second most spoken language, Spanish is the mother tongue of 460 million speakers or about 5% of the world’s population. From the provinces of Spain to the shores of Mexico and Argentina, twenty-one countries speak Spanish as an official language. In fact, there are more Spanish speakers in the United States than Spain, so chances are even if you don’t have plans to travel the world, you’ll still find plenty of ways to use Spanish at home.

Spanish and English both share Latin roots, so the vocabulary can feel familiar even if the grammar and sentence structure are not. Spanish and English share thousands of words that sound similar, called cognates, because they are derived from Latin. Learning Spanish can also give you a foothold into other Romance languages such as Portuguese, Italian, and French.

If you’ve struggled to learn Spanish in the past, you’re not alone. At Rosetta Stone, we understand that one of the most significant barriers language learners face is finding both the time and the right approach to studying Spanish. That’s why our Dynamic Immersion® methodology teaches Spanish words in context, presented in a learning environment that stimulates deeper connections. Our award-winning Learning Languages app is packed with features that customize your language learning journey so you can learn at your own pace, anytime and anywhere.

What’s the Best Way to Study Spanish?

Different learners have different styles and methods that work for them, but there are some best practices when it comes to language learning. Whether you’re trying to self-study Spanish or taking Spanish lessons , here are a few tips to accelerate your learning.

Learn Spanish in context

Using flashcards or doing dozens of vocabulary drills might help you remember some Spanish words in the short-term, but these methods rely on rote memorization. To make deeper connections to the language, you’ll want to learn words, phrases, and concepts in context. A learning environment rich with audio and visual cues that mimic real-world situations can help you develop conversational skills that stick with you.

Speak Spanish for yourself

It’s not enough to listen and recite words and phrases in Spanish . You’ll need to speak up for yourself. Pronunciation is a critical piece of learning a language, and whatever method you choose to study Spanish, you’ll want to receive feedback on your accent. After all, what good are knowing the words if you can’t understand or be understood when it matters?

Speak Spanish fearlessly

It’s easier said than done, but get comfortable with making mistakes. The process of learning a language can be delightfully messy, and everyone has a different journey. Embrace the imperfections. As long as you get out there and speak up in Spanish, you’ll improve.

Immerse yourself in Spanish

Surrounding yourself with Spanish is a fantastic way to train your ear to hear the inflection, tone, and pronunciation of the language. Listen to Spanish podcasts, stream Spanish soap operas with the subtitles off, or listen to Spanish music during your commute. You can even change the settings on all your devices to speak to you in Spanish. Any way you can fit it in, find a way to make Spanish part of your daily life.

Be consistent

Learning Spanish is a journey, not a destination. As long as you show up and do the work every day, you’ll find yourself gradually gaining confidence speaking Spanish. Committing to practice daily is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your efforts to study Spanish succeed. Even on hectic days when you don’t have time for a lesson, find ways to squeeze in listening and speaking in Spanish.

At Rosetta Stone, we practice what we preach. Our Spanish program presents words in context and encourages you to speak up from the very first lesson. Using our patented speech-recognition engine called TruAccent, you’ll get real-time feedback on your accent and get the opportunity to tweak it until you sound like a local.

I've been using Rosetta Stone for years to gain basic competency in multiple languages including German, French, Italian, and recently Chinese and Russian. Starts with the very basics teaching basic vocabulary and grammar without any memorization. I've even impressed some locals in my travels with pronunciation and fluency. This is an excellent place to start if interested in starting to learn a new language or brushing up on one learned years ago.

I am trying out Rosetta Stone, to see if it will help out with the correct grammar and conversation (as well as learning how to read and write the language). Within a week, I can already master the sentence structure and start learning the grammar with particles. The local community is so excited to see that I am starting to learn their language. Out of all the language learning tools out there, I 100% recommend Rosetta Stone!

I've tried other language learning software but Rosetta Stone is much more challenging and professional. I don't have to worry about earning points and following the leader board. I'm trying out the ninety day trial to learn some Russian and I will pay for the privilege once I reach the end of the trial.
