Goodbye in Polish

If you’d like to say “goodbye” in Polish, you have some options. The standard is “do widzenia”. It works in both formal and informal settings. More relaxed, however, would be saying “cześć”, or “pa pa“:

One of the interesting things about the Polish language is that it is widely-spoken and its status within Poland cements the country as the most linguistically homogeneous in all of Europe. Over 90% of Poland’s citizens speak Polish as a first language and, while there are several notable regional dialects, most Polish speakers can easily understand one another.

Polish also derives a large amount of its vocabulary directly from Latin—so familiarity with Latin roots will make the language more natural to digest for beginners. There is also overlap between Polish and Hungarian, Czech, French, and Turkish words. However, because the language is highly inflected and has a distinct subject-verb-object word order, it may feel a bit more challenging to learn for English speakers.

Rosetta Stone designs a language-learning program that builds confidence in speaking and understanding Polish. Whether you’re a beginner or an intermediate Polish speaker looking to advance your fluency, we can help. Rosetta Stone’s Dynamic Immersion® methodology teaches you to speak the language, not just memorize the words.

Learn to Speak Polish

Everyone must walk before they can run, and learning Polish most definitely follows this adage. Learning Polish must begin with acquiring an understanding of basic Polish sounds. The Polish language is not a tonal language. This means that Polish pronunciation is fairly consistent, most commonly with words that place stress on the second syllable.

With just a few exceptions, Polish is phonetic. This means that most Polish words are pronounced with sounds that correspond to the way the words are spelled. For example, once you learn to pronounce the digraph cz in words such as cześć (hello) and klucz (a key), many Polish words will no longer feel like a jumble of confusing consonants. Once you begin to focus on pronouncing individual letter sounds of the Polish alphabet, and also on pronouncing blends or digraphs, you’ll acquire a confidence in speaking Polish out loud.

Developing the skills to accurately pronounce Polish requires immediate feedback on your pronunciation efforts. Rosetta Stone helps you dial in your pronunciation with our TruAccent™ speech-recognition engine. TruAccent compares your voice to native and non-native speakers—in real-time—so you get the feedback you need for the most accurate pronunciation. It’s also adjustable, which allows you to tweak your accent as needed. TruAccent is a powerful tool for helping you learn and speak the Polish language.

Once you have acquired the basics of speaking Polish, you can transition to learning the longer phrases that are the backbone of everyday conversation. To broaden your Polish learning, you will find that it is helpful to focus on proven tactics that can accelerate your understanding of the Polish language. Rosetta Stone’s brief, 10-minute lessons are built to do just that—scaling naturally towards comfortably speaking Polish by consistently putting vocabulary acquisition in the context of everyday situations.
