Adidas Group’s New Way of Working: The Evolution?
Time is a continuum, and so are people-oriented initiatives the Adidas Group implements and instills within our company. In our previous five-year plan, we launched an initiative to instill a New Way of Working (NWOW) and built it around five key factors to influence our environment and our culture. These were:
- Open and honest
The desire was that, one day, the NEW way of working would just be THE way of working and true success would be when we no longer needed to even mention it. It would just be part of our DNA. As we recently embarked upon the next five-year plan, this NWOW initiative doesn’t just stop and no longer exist. No, it needs to be a foundation upon which we build the next step, an evolution of sorts, into the PEOPLE STRATEGY that will guide us to 2020, and beyond. This will be owned and lived by every leader within the company all over the world, regardless of location, brand or function. People are the key to our, and any company’s, success so we must ensure we are addressing this and approaching it in the same vein we would tackle sales or marketing initiatives.
Keep in mind that, by the year 2020, we will have four generations in the workforce. The span from Baby-Boomers to Millennials is huge, and we must be prepared for this future scenario. The world today is fraught with Volatility, Uncertainty, Change and Ambiguity (VUCA), all aspects that bring fright to many. But, it is our reality and the environment in which we must work and live, and in which we must prepare for the future. This must take into account jobs themselves, working hours, working space, even working place as more and more technology comes online making remote working locations possible. So, we now begin to look at the factors that drive us into the future, taking into account:
- Meaningful reasons to join and stay with us
- Role models that inspire us
- Taking advantage of our diverse perspectives
- Ensuring a creative climate
All these elements will be key to business success. The War for Talent is over, and talent has won. Today, talent dictates where they will ply their crafts and with whom they will associate and grow their skills and competencies. Finding the right people becomes a tougher proposition each day. Retaining them is even more of a challenge as more and more opportunities come online for the key talent around the world. Competition is no longer just about selling products, technical advancement or market share. Competition for people, the right people, is a core precept within which we must all concentrate and stay ahead of the curve. In HR, we have to have our people at the heart of everything we do, and how we do it. Our mission must be to create moments that matter to people as we all traverse the various eco-systems of our working life. And, this is what we try to encompass and instill as we embark upon the journey to 2020.
