Useful, but not perfect
I am moving to the Netherlands and wanted to get a jump start on learning dutch in the two months before I go. I speak pretty good french and English. What I like most about Rosetta stone is that you get to hear words and phrases repeated many times so you get a sense of what the language sounds like. Additionally they use several native speakers so you get a sense of what is acceptable pronunciation variation between regions/accents and not just what one individual sounds like. I also have a basic dutch grammar book with audio CD, but stopping and starting it to rehear words and phrases got old very quickly. I think Rosetta stone would be much better if there were brief grammatically explanations and a glossary if you wanted to use them. As it is, I find that if I look at basic grammar books in addition to Rosetta it is very useful. I am a scientist and I find having a grasp of the basic rules of grammar makes it much much easier to understand what is being presented (and more importantly why it is constructed as it is). Ideally Rosetta Stone would include this - yes I know children learn languages without this but one benefit of being an adult is your ability to apply general rules.
I am currently half way through lesson 3 in level 1 and am still enjoying it. The live studio tutors have been very good and are both challenging and fun. Just for that you get good value as private language lessons can easily run $50-100/hr. I wish I had bought the home school edition which comes with a workbook. I'd recommend searching around for a good coupon and then taking the plunge if you are serious about learning some dutch. You won't be fluent but you'll have a grounding to build on.

sound language course
The course is a good introduction to a language, I have studied Dutch before and found that the Rosetta Stone course great for pronunciation and uses cleaver tools to help memory recall.
Great features like being able to repeat sections, it uses an interactive menu, it's presentation is awesome.

On the whole, I like the Rosetta Stone program and feel that I have acquired a reasonable amount of knowledge (vocabulary and reading.) However, I have been frustrated on many occasions by the fact that there is no way to determine the meaning of new words, if they cannot be ascertained through context. I would like to have a printout of the lessons (with translations) as a supplement to the program as it is currently presented.
The basic lessons (Level 1) were great. I am currently near the end of Level 2 and have been trying to find a good Dutch/English dictionary as I am reading words that I can only guess the meanings of.
The scores are encouraging, but the reality is that unless I know the true meaning of the words, I am hesitant about using them.
Another feature I would like to see added to the program is a chat line where questions could be answered as they arise.
As noted above, I do like the program and think highly of it, but I would like to see the additional features I have mentioned here.

Should've Bought Sooner
I have been wanting to order one of your language programs for a very long time but kept putting it off for the fear that I would just learn a few words and that would be it, but very soon I found in just the first tape I could commuicate with fellow members of my family quite easily and having the tapes in my car was very helpful to me for I travel alot. The audio companion was the biggest help of all without having an actual language teacher in my house tutoring me. This product contains all you need and then some to learn another language. As soon as I'm complete with this language,it's on to another.Tot ziens.

RosettaStone really is the way to go if you want to learn a language! I have not found a better way to this day. I have had a lot of fun with this program, and have learned so much.

Best Way to Learn a Language
After having already learned one language overseas on my own with classes, books, and conversation, I can say that Rosetta Stone is the best method of language learning I have ever experienced! My family and I are learning Dutch, and I am amazed at how quickly and intuitively we are understanding the language. This software is even helpful and enjoyable for my 5 year old daughter! Rosetta Stone is helping us learn quickly!

Great Product
As a native Dutch speacker I can tell you that this program is really effective and you will not regret trying this product.
I personally completed levels 1 & 2 alone to see how effective it is for my friend in USA. Although when you complete all 3 levels you wont be fluent at the language, you will definatly be on a conversation level.
With Rosetta Stone completed and you spend a few months in Netherlands, you will have the language of Dutch down fast! I reccomend this product

Good but a few points,
Good product in many ways, other reviews already focus on the positives so will just comment on a few negatives;
1) The fact that images are standard across all languages and not made to be specific to the country of each specific language is poor considering the price ..
2) Gets a bid tedious after a while - especially as the parts of each lesson after the 'core' are essentially repeats of what you have in the core lesson - really there needs to be new pictures and new ideas here, as gets a bit boring ..
3) Much is made of it being easy to use and no tedious remembering etc .. however contrary to modern theories language learning is hard work (everything requires effort etc) .. and I have found the number of hours put into this product don't match what could have been gained with a harder work, less fun method .. that said for those who are less academically inclines, Rosetta Stone is probably perfect
In light of above would say it is a very useful all round product and particularly good when accompanied by going through a book that focuses more on grammar.
(one more point, it should be much cheaper to buy an extra language after initial purchase of one language - shouldn't expect you to pay the whole price again, especially if all the pictures are the same)

Rosetta Stone Dutch has been an excellent resource in learning the Dutch language. I am learning it at a rate faster than I ever expected. I am in unit 3 of level 1 and am already building my own sentences. The audio CDs are excellent review lessons. To make the program even better I would add a few grammar tables as a resource area.

Best training tool by far!!
I am an English speaking elearning specialist working in The Netherlands. I find this course better than the classroom training I attended for few weeks. The course has high level of interactivity and enagages the learner thoroughly. Within a month we can speak basic level dutch which is very encouaging.
We strongly recommend Rosetta Stone as an effective language tool.

Rosetta Stone in Dutch
I have tried for years to learn Dutch only to find again and again it is not that easy. I have tried every learning book out there including the ones on the internet. Until I got Rosetta Stone I felt like a failure but this is truly a remarkable program. It makes it so easy to learn at your own pace without pressure. The more I use it the better I am becoming at learning Dutch. Yes I did know some words and phrases and could read some Dutch but not to the extent that this program teaches you. I feel as if a whole new world has been opened to me. This has been the best purchase I have made and it has helped me understand Dutch in a way I never learned before.
Even my husband who could speak Dutch alot better than me loves it.
My advice to those of you who are undecided as to whether or not to buy the Rosetta Stone no matter what language you want to learn is:
GO FOR IT!!!! You wont be sorry you did.

It Works!
I am in my late 50's and have attempted to learn other languages through the traditional school method and by using other tapes and CD's. These methods were not effective for me in that the best I ever did was to learn a few phrases. I could not understand the language I was trying to learn nor could I have hoped to communicate with anyone in those languages.
Then I gave Rosetta Stone a try on a language I have never attempted to learn before. The old cliche of it is unique and really works is a fact with this method. Like learning your native tounge it is with the ears and eyes. Like a child I am able to understand more than I can speak (I am through the first three units of level one). The practice is allowing me to improve on the speech, writing and reading. I cannot recommend this program enough to anyone who has a desire to learn another language.

Fantastic Experience
My husband and I had to move to Holland. It's a wonderful country but its language is quite difficult mainly when you come from a Latin World. I speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian...Well, English doesnt come from the Latin but its essencial for life if you want to grow and develop other areas of your life, to increase your knowledge and to reach higher levels in Education or Business. Rosetta Stone can help you bringing a wonderful new way of learning other languages. The program is interative and we all have fun. I recommend it. I have already recommended it to several friends and some of them bought already the Italain, English and Spanish. Now here in Holland we show our Rosetta to friends who doesnt speak Dutch but are living here with the same difficulty we had before Rosetta. It's always good to help.

A Great Start
This product is great for getting a start to learning a new language. While it doesn't getting you to a fluent level, it will definitely get you to a conversation level where, if you're serious, you can take it to the next level.
The program is very straight forward on how to use and even assists you should you need help. While the program does a great job in their learn-naturally approach, there are some phrases and ideas that it tries to teach that are hard to understand. For these few instances, it may be a good idea to get an online translator or dictionary to help out. It would be nice if Rosetta Stone would come with a standard "Translations" document instead, but it's understandable that they don't with their advertising campaigns.
Rosetta Stone is focused more towards the spoken version of the language rather than reading and writing which can be challenging at times when you just want to practice the writing portion.
As far as the quality of Rosetta Stone, I feel I've learned more worthwhile information about the language in my first few weeks than I spent in classes for other languages, but unlike what's said, you learn more overall in a class. If possible, doing both would definitely be a benefit.
I would definitely recommend Rosetta Stone as a getting started language learning course for anyone.

This product made my life even better!
I was weary when I first purchased Rosetta Stone to learn Dutch because I had tried so many other programs before. However, since I had heard it was a good product I took a leap of faith and tried it. I am thankful that I did. My husband is from the Netherlands and he always translated what I wanted to say to his family for me. I decided it was my time to learn the language and be able to speak with his family directly. After a few weeks of practicing on just level 1, I was able to communicate a little bit more with his family. Now that I have finished level 3, I can have open conversations with them and when I am unsure of what kind of word to use, I know enough to ask them for help. It has made my life easier, and I feel a deeper connection to his family now than I thought was ever possible. Thank you Rosetta Stone!

Ja, graag.
I am a college student currently working on my second degree. The first was philosophy and that didn't open many doors. This time around, I've been working on an International Studies degree. I'm just fascinated with how the world is connected. I've decided to undertake my first Master's program at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. I was able to visit the city last year and fell in love. Granted, most individuals from the Netherlands speak English, but that isn't the way to get the most out of the experience. Last December, I purchased Dutch Levels 1-3 and I'm currently on the third level. I'm almost at a loss for words. The program is so fun I don't really look at it as another subject I'm taking to further my education. I try to get a few exercises done everyday. The part that really impresses me about Rosetta Stone is that because of how you are addressed with the information, you could take a few days off and pick up right where you left off as if you never stopped. That's pretty important in my book. Anyone who remembers taking a language course in high school can vouch that all it takes is one long weekend to forget the material you were just tested on. The multi-faceted approach to teaching you a new language that Rosetta Stone employs is absolutely amazing. Some of the information may seem repetitive but it is always building on itself. I even enjoy that you can follow the lives of the characters in the program. I get a little kick out of noticing "Hey, that's the guy that was looking for the museum so he could give a lecture, and now he and his wife are just coming back from a three month trip in Italy." My confidence in my Dutch communication skills is definitely higher thanks to Rosetta Stone. I will be trying other languages in the future.
Tot ziens.

The best automated language course
Everything is arranged very clever, the speaking excercises work surprisingly well, nice interface, nice graphics and pictures, recapitulation of the previous material is regular and optimal.

Dutch made EASY!
What a great way to learn a language! This language course made me anxious to get to my PC every day to get to the next level. As much fun as a game, but even more succesful at getting you aquanted with the language in a great interactive and fun way. The audio compannion is wonderfull, and keeps what you've learnt fresh in your memory. I loved it, and plan to learn a language a year over the next two years in the same way. It's possible, and it's fun!
