About Polish

Polish is the official language of Poland. There are more than 40 million Polish speakers who consider it their first language. Polish is also one of the official languages of the European Union.

Polish Learning Tips

  • Polish uses marks to indicate the pronunciation of certain letters. These marks are
    ˛  ogonek          bar        ´  kreska        ˙  kropka
  • Many actions described in Polish have two verbs: one for when the action is in one direction, and another for when the action is in several different directions.
  • Polish nouns and adjectives change form depending on how they are used in sentences or phrases. Rosetta Stone shows you how to recognize the changes in the words and how that affects their meaning.
  • Singular nouns in Polish fall into three categories: masculine, feminine, or neuter. The ending of a noun reflects its category.
  • Most Polish verbs have two different forms, one for completed actions and another for ongoing actions.
  • Don’t be surprised if you see sentences without subjects. Rosetta Stone teaches you how to identify who is speaking or who is being spoken about by recognizing the form of the verb.
  • Polish has both formal and informal ways to address others depending on the age of the speaker and the relationship to the person being addressed.
