About Irish
Irish is spoken primarily in Ireland. In the Republic of Ireland, nearly half of the population speaks Irish as a first or second language.
Irish Learning Tips
- You’ll notice stroke marks over some letters in Irish. These indicate when a vowel is long.
- The meaning of words in Irish can depend on whether the vowel is long or short.
- You may notice that each consonant in Irish has two varieties of pronunciation, depending on context.
- Don’t be surprised if you see uppercase letters within a word. In some situations, the second letter appears in upper case.
- Irish has no exact equivalent of ‘yes.’ Instead of affirming with a single word, an Irish speaker generally repeats the question.
- You’ll notice that Irish noun forms vary depending on whether they are masculine or feminine.
- While in many languages, words change at the end to reflect their relationship with other words, Irish words can change at the beginning as well. For example, an ‘h’ may be inserted.
