How to

Learn Dutch and prepare to hopscotch across the globe! From Europe to South America, South Africa to Indonesia, Dutch is the 37th most-spoken native language in the world. A West Germanic language, Dutch is the native language of most of the people in the Netherlands, and of about 60 percent of the people in Belgium and Suriname. Over six million people in South Africa speak a close relative to Dutch, Afrikaans.

But enough about the numbers, let's talk about the rich cultures of Dutch-speaking people. Historically known as a seafaring power and the birthplace of painters like Vermeer, Rembrandt, and van Gogh, the Netherlands is renowned for its diversity and liberal society. Dutch engineers are known around the world as masters of controlling water, which continues to be a defining geographical feature of the Netherlands as more than a quarter of the land is below sea level. Of course, any nation that's so intimately familiar with the sea has to be known for its fish dishes. It's said that Dutch fisherman Willem Beukelszoon developed the process of pickling fish in 1380.

Across the Atlantic in the Republic of Suriname-formerly known as Dutch Guiana-you'll find a population largely decedents of African and Indonesian slaves and servants who served the Dutch colonialists. Inhabitants live mostly on the northeastern region, which is bookended by a coastal border and dense rain forests. Shoe lovers have a Suriname native to thank: Jan Ernst Matzeliger. He moved to Massachusetts as a young man, and a decade later, in 1883, invented and patented shoe-manufacturing machinery. Naturalists will be intrigued by another Suriname native, the Suriname toad, whose reproductive habits result in fully developed offspring being born on the backs of the mothers.

Rosetta Stone® Dutch will have you speaking instantly and confidently whenever and wherever you may need it.
