As vice president of technology and Rosetta Stone Labs, Mike Fulkerson leads the company’s advanced research and development group, which is driving innovation for all language-learning technologies related to future products. Rosetta Stone Labs is undergoing active efforts in speech recognition, Web communities, social networks, online games, user modeling and novel ways to deliver products.

Prior to joining Rosetta Stone, Mike worked in Washington, D.C. as a technical director for Serco (formerly Resource Consultants Inc.), a provider of managerial and technological consulting services. Previous to that he was a technical product manager for ILOG, the makers of the award-winning JRules enterprise business-rule management system. Mike worked closely with many of ILOG’s marquee clients in the areas of investment banking, insurance and online commerce. He began his career in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer on a destroyer in Charleston, S.C. Prior to leaving the service, Mike obtained the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Mike holds a Ph.D. in computer science with specialization in artificial intelligence and computer linguistics from Duke University, Durham N. C., as well as a B.S. and M.S. in computer science from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. Mike is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. He serves on the Computer Science External Advisory Council of James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.
