Rosetta Stone Version 4 TOTALe Puts Native Speakers on Your Desktop

Ever since Rosetta Stone was founded, we’ve pursued the best ways to use technology to make the wonderful journey of language learning as fun, easy, and fast as possible. Rosetta Stone® Version 4 TOTALe is the culmination of many years of hard work and passionate dedication by teams in every department.

studioOur vision has always been twofold: to provide not only the self-study software you need to learn a language and to offer an environment where you can practice what you’ve learned with real people. After all, you’re not learning a language to talk to your computer. There’s nothing like the little fluttery feeling in your stomach the first few times you try speaking a new language to a native speaker—and the relief and excitement when they understand you without missing a beat!

In Version 4, we created a single, seamless learning experience with three environments:

  • Rosetta Course is the foundation of our language-learning experience. You learn to speak, understand, read, and write your new language in a carefully crafted sequence of real-life contexts that progressively builds from simple words and phrases to complex conversations.
  • Rosetta Studio is where you chat with a tutor who’s a native speaker of your new language. Our tutors know exactly what you’ve learned in Rosetta Course, and the Studio sessions are crafted so you can always use language you’ve already learned. You’ll hear a smile in your own voice as you start talking with a native speaker in real time. As you see in the screenshot above, the tutor has a webcam and appears in a small window on your screen. (Don’t worry, you have complete privacy.) No one can see you, but your tutor and any other learners in your Studio session can hear you speak.
  • Rosetta World is home to our online games and activities. Here, you can play language games by yourself (we call that Solo), with other learners (Duo), or with native speakers of your new language (Simbio). Solo games reinforce what you’ve learned in a lightweight, entertaining way. In Duo, you click, type, or speak with other learners to solve puzzles and play games. Simbio provides a chance to engage in a language exchange with a partner—they’re learning your native language, and you’re learning theirs. You play together—one game in your new language and one game in your partner’s new language. In my case, I’m learning Russian, so I play a game in Russian with a native Russian speaker, and then a game in English because my partner is learning English. We both get to communicate in a symbiotic language exchange, in games and activities that are automatically appropriate to our level.

You enjoy all three of the Version 4 TOTALe learning environments within a single, integrated application on your computer. When you open the app, you have a world of learning coupled with a safe, encouraging world of native speakers. Never has it been so fast and simple to learn on your own and practice in real-time with native speakers all from the comfort of your home or when you’re on the go with the Mobile Companion.

I hope as you explore TOTALe you’ll have as much fun speaking your new language as we’ve had enhancing and enriching the Rosetta Stone experience. Once you try Version 4, you’ll know it’s the best way to pick up a new language.
