Introducing Rosetta Stone® Version 4 TOTALe™: Read, Write, Speak, and Understand

update copy, new Rosetta Stone, language learning

Today’s release of Rosetta Stone® Version 4 TOTALe™ is nothing short of momentous—for our company as well as for the world of language learning. We’ve filled a big market gap through this new offering.

With Version 4 TOTALe, we launch the third way to learn a new language. The trade-off of convenient self-study and live, human instruction is resolved in favor of learners—so there’s no longer a need to compromise. We’ve combined our interactive course with live, conversational tutoring and a real-time community to provide a significantly richer and better experience for all our learners. The result is even better outcomes in language acquisition. From now on, all our individual customers in the United States will not just learn on their own, they’ll also be able to practice in real time with other people. It all happens without translation or boring grammar explanations—and it can be accessed anywhere.

Rosetta Stone Version 4

This is a roll-out of capabilities we made available to a limited subset of customers last year with our original TOTALe online release (which got rave reviews from learners and the media). Now we’re making these premium features available to all—so they’re now part of all our core language-learning solutions for individual learners.

Version 4 TOTALe offers four exciting new features:

  1. Online and offline access*. Whether or not you have online access, you can still study. Many activities work even if you can’t get online, so you can do Rosetta Course™, for example, while sitting on a plane. As soon as you’re back online, you can engage in community games or practice what you’ve learned in a conversational Rosetta Studio™ session.
  2. Single app, single icon. Our new software runs on a single application, and you use a single icon on your desktop to access Rosetta Stone TOTALe, whether or not you’re online—like many of the apps you enjoy on your iPhone® or iPad® device. You never need to use your own web browser.
  3. Continuity. We offer a perpetual license to Rosetta Course, so you can come back and continue learning, even if you take a break for a few months.
  4. Mobility. You get access to Rosetta Stone TOTALe Companion™, an application that runs on your iPod Touch® or your iPhone® device**. It helps you practice pronunciation when you’re on the go.

Of course, Version 4 TOTALe realizes its potential through the dedicated work of our tutors, who lead you in live practice sessions, and our support teams. We’ve hired and trained individuals committed to creating success, and they’re eager to start working with new learners. These groundbreaking services are poised to become a defining element of what makes us unique in business and language learning.

Is version 4 available for homeschool?
    Thank you.

  • Scott Cowcher

Can you use Totale 4 on an iPad.
Can I have Rosetta Stone on my laptop and my iPad?

  • Tameika Tinsley

I just ordered Rosetta Stone totale. I read that some people are unhappy with the app for the software because it costs $50 for 3 months. I know that it also cost to extend your, games and chat with a professional, time. Is it still $50 for 3 months, how much is it to extend your time on the games and with a professional, and if the price is $50 why is it soooo much????

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi, Tameika. Thank you for your question. The TOTALe Mobile Companion app for iPhone/iPod Touch is actually a free app with your TOTALe purchase. You have access to it as long as you maintain access to the online features of TOTALe. When you purchase a Level 1 TOTALe product, you receive three months access to the online features of TOTALe (plus the Mobile Companion). You are offered six months of access with a two levels purchase, nine months of access with a three level purchase, and fifteen months of access with a five level purchase.

For more information on the TOTALe Mobile Companion, you can visit our online Knowledge Base here: If you have any other concerns, feel free to give us a call at 1800-280-8172, or you can email us or Live Chat with us through the following link: We would be more than happy to speak with you and answer any questions you have!

  • Peter Mayer

I have a question for you: I would like to have one device that I use for studying Rosetta Stone, whether I’m home or away. I travel a lot. I already have software for courses 1 and 2. Would an iphone do the trick? Or an ipad? (can you use an ipad for Rosetta Stone?). Or will I need a regular laptop?

  • Sherry Irvine

HI: I am interested in buying an app teaching English to Spanish – for my iphone. At this point, I do not want to buy the full Rosetta Stone computer program. We are going to Panama so having support in terms of an iphone app is all that we are looking for. Is there a stand alone iphone app that Rosetta Stone offers?? I understand that Rosetta Stone is a quality program and we will eventually buy the full program – but not now.

    Looking forward to your response.
    Thank you.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi, Sherry. Currently we do not offer a stand-alone app for iPhone, although we are very interested in creating such a product. Right now, our iPhone/iPod Touch TOTALe Mobile Companion app is meant to be used as a companion to the Rosetta Stone software, and it is only available to customers who purchase Rosetta Stone Version 4 TOTALe products. We hope this helps, and we’re glad that you are interested in Rosetta Stone. If you have any questions for us in the future about our products, feel free to visit our website ( or you can give us a call at 877-434-8913. Thanks!

  • Sherry Irvine

HI: Still researching for an iphone app and have just visited your website. While in Panama, we will not have internet access so instead of purchasing a book for language support – we would prefer an iphone app.

  • J Casey

    How about the Android market?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi, J. We are always working on new products and are very interested in the Android platform. So stay tuned here for updates. You can also find us on Facebook ( and Twitter ( Thanks!

  • Brandon Farley

I have observed plenty of questions concerning availability of your product for the iPad. Responses have only cited the iPhone and iPod, and, no reference of the iPad at all.

An iPad is not an iPod or a iPhone; is it, I have no idea.

Can you directly say yes or no if your product is available on the iPad?

I have an iPad. I use it a lot while commuting by train or at home on the sofa. This is the only device I am interested in having Rosetta Stone products – wanting to learn Spanish.

  • Curtis

Can I install it on my IPAD and will it work??

  • James

Does this mean if I live in Australia I can’t download the totale companion

    • Rosetta Stone

That is correct. But we’re always working on new products and services, so stay tuned to the blog for more information.

  • Donna

If I purchase the level 5 program and get the 15 months of online access included…how much is it to renew after that 15 months? I’m fairly certain I will not be able to make it through all 5 levels in that time with my busy schedule.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Donna, extending a subscription is a very easy process that you can complete right on your computer. To find out more about pricing, you can call (877)434-8913 and talk to a Rosetta Stone representative. Good luck with your language adventure!

  • rob damico

I definitely want to start the Rosetta Stone TOTALE4 program, but it only make sense to me to have it when it is completely available on the new iPad. Because of the popularity of the iPad, it seems a no brainer to me to make RST4 compatible with the iPad. Any time frame on when it will be available?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Rob! Thanks for letting us know.

  • Mike Fontaine

I would also like to see a version for the ipad. Instead of something that helps though, I think a FULL version for the ipad would be ideal. This is the PERFECT application for such a device with people always on the go and having less ability to spend time in front of a computer and no desire to lug a full laptop around. I do have a question though… with the TotalE4 program, I understand that the mobile application is not optimized for the ipad, but shouldn’t it still work? I imagine the resolution would not be as good as an application specifically designed for the platform but it should still work. Can you confirm or deny this? I’m holding off on making a purchase of both products until I find out. Thanks!

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Mike, thanks for giving us your thoughts on different platforms. At this time, we are not announcing any new TOTALe Mobile Companion platforms, or any new tablet platforms for Rosetta Stone. Keep in touch with us through the blog, and we’ll try to give you the most updated information as it comes to us. We appreciate your interest in language learning!

  • Evan

I work at a school and we use the classroom edition. Students have iPod and iPads. Wondering if an app is available for them to use.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Evan! Rosetta Stone offers the Audio Companion for students to study on their iPods, which is available as an additional purchase. Using the Audio Companion CDs, learners will hear and repeat the words and phrases in activities that match the lessons in Rosetta Stone software, boosting comprehension and recall. We do not have apps available for classroom students at this time, but we appreciate your interest!

  • Angie

Will version 4 be available for homeschool soon?

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Angie, we will post to the blog as soon as we have any updates on new availability, platforms, or upgrades available. Thanks for checking in with us!

  • Max

Hello! My partner and I are sharing our Rosetta Stone software and would like to know if we can install the mobile companion on both our iPhones.

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Max, two people can use the Mobile Companion! Just download it to each phone from the App store. You’ll use the e-mail and password you made on your computer.

  • Dan

I want to second (or third) the request for a stand alone iPad app. I currently have the software on my laptop, but it is never with me when I actually have time to use it. Get the software in the iPad and I’m getting it the next day.

    • Rosetta Stone

Thanks Dan. We appreciate your comment!

  • Diane

I agree that you should make a version for the ipad top priority. The ipad has exploded into the marketplace, and you could be exploding with it. In the meantime, many of us are buying other language apps with money we would rather spend on a Rosetta Stone ipad app, if one existed. You are losing out!

    • Rosetta Stone

Hi Diane, thank you for your input. We appreciate hearing from you about the platforms you would like to see in the future!

  • miranda

How many computers can i install my Rosetta Stone version 4 on?

    • Rosetta Stone

      Hi Miranda,
The Version 4 TOTALe program is designed to be installed on one computer, with up to five users on that one computer. We also have “learning on the go” options, including the Audio and Mobile Companions, which we would be happy to discuss with you!
